What REALLY is a Girl`s Best Friend
We hate to disagree with Ms. Monroe, but we do beg to differ. New science is emerging that a girl`s best friend are Omega 3`s--not diamonds. Although diamonds are worth a lot monetarily--Omega 3`s give you riches that cannot be measured! Omega 3`s (aka Essential Fatty Acids) are the heart-healthy essential fats that our bodies cannot produce on its own and therefore require an external source to obtain. A recent Danish study suggests that taking this (whether in a supplement form or through whole food sources) can cut the risk of cardiovascular disease in young women between the ages of 29 and 47.
We couldn`t imagine a better month for this study`s findings to be released; February is National Heart Disease Awareness and Go Red for Women month. Heart disease is the number one killer in women, even though we fear and get checked more often for diseases like breast cancer, ovarian cancer and HPV. The study revealed that Omega 3`s protect the heart in different ways. They help lower triglyceride levels in the blood (these levels are a red flag for doctors, as they can often be a precursor to heart disease) as well as helping to reduce inflammation of blood vessels, which is also a road to heart disease. Omega 3`s also make the blood less `sticky`, reducing blood clot formation as well as boosting the blood`s natural heart protecting HDL (High-Density Lipoprotein) For more information on cholesterol and how the levels affect you, visit our previous blog on the subject September is National Cholesterol Education Month, which breaks down exactly what you need to be concerned about and what questions to ask your doctor when having blood work done.
