Study Confirms Mammograms Save Lives
A recently-concluded study shows that mammograms work. The longitudinal study followed women over the course of nearly three decades and consistently found the early-detection procedure saves lives.
According to a Reuters story, the study included 130,000 women over 29 years. The women in the screening group had a 30 percent lower fatality rate for breast cancer. What’s more, the number of women saved by mammograms went up each year.
The study also found a very low false-positive rate, meaning most tests that resulted in a diagnosis were correct. The researchers recommended women over 40 be checked every two years.
