Side Effects

Are medications getting more dangerous? Lists of side effects are getting longer. This is not primarily due to the medicines themselves, however. Doctors are more attuned to side effects, and pharmaceutical companies are required to be more thorough about listing them.

In particular, long lists of side effects indicate not a concern for the patient's safety from ham but rather for the company's safety from lawsuits. It's much harder to win a case if the packaging warns the patient about the effect.

Unfortunately, this information explosion is confusing patients. To try and control it, some pharmacies are starting to create personalized labels, highlighting problems that the patient the medicine is for might be particularly vulnerable to and downplaying irrelevant effects.
