Protect your skin in the summer
Sunburn is a summer danger that should not be underestimated. Not only does it increase your cancer risk, it's uncomfortable and can make walking around or wearing clothes unpleasant.
Much sunburn could be avoided if more people remembered that cloud cover won't necessarily protect you. While you burn more slowly through clouds, it's a mistake to think you won't burn at all. Another mistake people often make is assuming one application of sunblock will get them through the day. If you're out all day, experts say, you'll need a refresher.
If you do get burned, aloe vera gel or lotion is effective to soothe the discomfort and prevent blistering, but stay away from petroleum jelly or anything ending with "-aine"; those can make things worse. Bathing in oatmeal sounds like an old wives' tale, but it's actually effective. Just don't use soap or rub yourself dry.
