New RLS Gene Link Discovered
Although only recently recognized as a distinct condition, restless legs syndrome is a legitimate, treatable problem. In fact, it is one of the most commonly diagnosed neurological diseases. Research is ongoing into treatments as well as causes. Recently, scientists have discovered genetic factors that raise a patient's likelihood of developing RLS.
Doctors had previously identified four genetic regions where gene mutations are associated with RLS. Now there are reports of two more regions, including one called TOX3. When TOX3 is functioning correctly it produces a protein that protects brain cells from cell death.
These findings are likely to be important in helping develop ways to treat or prevent the condition. Current treatment recommendations include regular sleep and avoiding alcohol and tobacco use.
