Here We Go Again

In 2009 a mutation of the H1N1 influenza virus (aka the swine flu) rocked the U.S.; and because it was such a novel strain of influenza, most of the existing vaccines provided little protection. Here we are two years later and we may be finding ourselves in a very similar predicament. State health officials have discovered a new flu strain in Iowa. Luckily, so far all three people that have been afflicted with this new strain have fully recovered.

According to the Iowa Department of Public Health The A/H3N2 virus was first detected in three children in Webster and Hamilton counties. It has also made short-lived appearances in other states, but seems to be limited in its ability to spread as there have been no other new cases reported within the last week.

The symptoms are similar to that of the regular flu--fever, cough, fatigue and body aches--but just like two years ago, this virus is unique and it is unclear as to whether the current flu vaccine has any impact on it. Right now, all health officials can do is hope that it will provide some protection and increase their surveillance for the strain at clinics, doctor`s offices and emergency rooms.
